Generational Cycles

We can't fix our parent's issues but we don't have to repeat them

Hurt people, hurt people. Unless we can heal ourselves before (and only before) we meet new individuals, we will transfer our pain to that relationship, which will, in turn, perpetuate generational curses, especially when it involves our young children.

The allegory of Plato’s Cave seems to have been ignored. We must pay attention and WAKE UP from the shadows on the wall.

Uninvited Expectations

“Why aren’t you doing better?”

Have you ever sat around chatting to your girlfriend, listening to her complain about X, Y, & Z, and then she looks up at you and demands to know why you didn’t take care of “it”? Did you even agree to take on such a responsibility?

Unagreed-upon expectations (sometimes called implicit or unspoken expectations) refer to assumptions, desires, or standards that one person holds in a relationship—romantic, friendship, family, or professional—without clearly communicating them to the other person.

With both cases with boys and girls, the core wound is the same: a fractured sense of being unconditionally loved and valued by the first man who was supposed to protect them. Girls tend to turn the pain inward and seek love to fill the void; boys tend to turn it outward or armor up against it.

Without intervention—such as a consistent stepfather, grandfather, mentor, or therapy—these early patterns harden into adult relationship struggles that can last a lifetime.

Relationships

When a baby cries at night, the mother will wake immediately and care for the child, while the father will sleep through the noise. When a bump is heard at night or there is a disturbance in the house, the mother will sleep through it, whereas the father will immediately jump up and address the situation. Men are better at fixing things. Women are better at managing relationships.

Mental Health

It’s okay to be selfish sometimes because prioritizing your own needs can lead to better mental health, personal growth, and the ability to show up more fully for others. If you’re constantly neglecting yourself—your boundaries, goals, or well-being, you risk burnout, resentment, or losing your sense of identity.

According to the Ohio Family Court Feasibility Study, shortly after the creation of the nation’s first juvenile courts at the turn of the century, two state legislatures began to consider the idea of expanding the breadth of their experiment from a court with jurisdiction over the legal matters of children to one over the law as it pertained to families and their children.
